Why Cannabis Businesses Shouldn't Build on Instagram Alone

Walk down Sukhumvit and count the shops that put an Instagram handle on the door instead of a website. In the early open era that made sense. Instagram was free, fast, visual, and where the tourists were. Many Bangkok dispensaries built their whole brand there.

Then the accounts started disappearing.

Here is the short version for any cannabis business in Thailand. Instagram is useful, but it is rented land, and your landlord has written rules against your product. Thailand has banned cannabis advertising on top. A business that lives only on cannabis Instagram can lose its audience overnight and has no right of appeal that it controls. Use Instagram. Do not build on it alone.

I have visited more than 900 dispensaries across Thailand, and I came into this world from brand and performance marketing at global agencies. This is the argument I make to every shop owner who asks me where to put their effort.

Rented Land vs Owned Land

Marketers talk about channels in two groups.

Rented land is any platform where someone else owns the audience, the rules and the off switch. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, even LINE groups to a degree.

Owned land is anything you control: your website, your domain, your customer relationships, your reputation in the street. Your Google Business Profile sits in between. Google owns the platform, but the listing describes a real, licensed place, and it is where most customers actually decide.

Every business should use rented land. The mistake is treating it as the foundation. For most industries the risk is modest. For cannabis it is not.

Why Cannabis Instagram Is Especially Risky

Meta's rules are written against your core product

Meta's Restricted Goods and Services policy does not allow content that attempts to buy, sell or trade marijuana or products containing THC. That rules out the most natural things a shop wants to post: the menu, the prices, the new arrivals, "DM to order".

What it does allow is business related content from dispensaries that does not try to sell, and content that speaks positively about cannabis. But both are restricted to adults 18 and over. Your account starts life with a smaller possible audience than a coffee shop next door.

Paid reach is closed

Meta's advertising rules say ads may not promote or offer the sale of THC or psychoactive cannabis products. CBD ads need prior authorisation and are limited to the United States. A Thai dispensary cannot buy its way out of a reach problem on Meta, even before Thai law comes into it.

Organic reach is throttled

Meta's Recommendations Guidelines name content promoting regulated products among the things it may not recommend to non followers, and say that profiles repeatedly showing such content can be held back entirely. I break down how to check this in how to check for an Instagram shadowban on a cannabis account. The practical result is that new people find you far less often than your post quality deserves.

The account itself can vanish

Accounts that break the Community Standards can be disabled, and if a review fails the account is gone, and Meta's terms do not let you sign up again if your account was disabled for breaking the law or its policies. Everything you built there, the followers, the DMs, the archive, goes with it. If that has already happened to you, start with what to do when Instagram disables your cannabis account.

Thai law sits on top of all of it

Since June 2025, commercial cannabis advertising has been banned on every platform in Thailand, and online sales of flower are banned too. An advertising breach can earn a shop a 30 day licence suspension. Online sales can cost the licence entirely. The draft Cannabis Control Act, now with Parliament, is reported to keep the ad ban.

So the content that would grow an account fastest is the content that is most likely to get it removed by Meta and most likely to get the shop in trouble with the regulator. That is the trap. I wrote about why this does not mean marketing is dead in the ad ban didn't kill cannabis marketing, it made it mandatory.

What Your Customers Actually Use

Here is the part owners often miss. Your customers do not find you on Instagram as much as you think.

A tourist who lands in Bangkok and wants a licensed shop types something into Google or Google Maps. "Weed Bangkok" alone is searched around 3,600 times a month globally. They look at the map, the stars, the photos and the opening hours. They check whether the shop is legitimate. Then they walk in. Instagram, for many of them, is something they look at afterwards, if at all.

From ThaiCannaMapped's own audit, around 75% of dispensaries in Thailand's tourist areas have no dedicated website. That means three quarters of shops are leaving the most important search surface to chance, while pouring effort into the one platform that is actively limiting them.

What to Build Instead

None of this means delete your Instagram. It means change what sits underneath it.

1. A simple website you own

One page is enough to start: who you are, where you are, opening hours, that you are licensed, that a prescription is required, and how the PT33 process works. No prices as promotion, no ordering, no "buy now". Even a plain price list is a grey zone to check with a Thai lawyer. The site is your permanent address on the internet, and it does not get disabled because an algorithm misread a photo. I cover exactly what to include in does a dispensary need a website if it has Instagram.

2. A Google Business Profile that is accurate and alive

Correct name, correct category, real hours, real photos of the shopfront and the staff, and replies to reviews. This is where tourists decide. If yours has gone missing or keeps getting suspended, read why dispensaries vanish from Google Maps.

3. Search visibility

A few useful pages about your area, your licence, and what a first visit looks like, written in English and Thai, will bring in people searching for exactly what you offer. The basics are in dispensary SEO for Bangkok shops.

4. Reviews and reputation

Reviews are the one form of promotion you do not write yourself. Ask every customer, not just the happy ones, answer every review politely, and never buy them. Customers can tell, and I have written about how dispensary ratings in Bangkok are not always real.

5. Proof you are licensed

Display your licence sticker clearly, and make sure your shop appears correctly on the ThaiCannaMapped Dispensary Register. Trust is a ranking factor with humans, even when it is not with algorithms.

6. Then Instagram, done properly

With the foundation in place, Instagram becomes what it should be: a brand channel for people who already know you. Staff, neighbourhood, education, culture, community. Profile photo of your logo, not a bud. Bio that says where you are and that a prescription is required. Link to your website, never to an order line.

A Simple Test for Your Shop

Ask yourself one question. If your Instagram disappeared tonight, how would a new customer find you tomorrow?

If the answer is "Google Maps, our website and the reviews", you are fine. Instagram is a bonus.

If the answer is "they wouldn't", you have a single point of failure sitting on a platform whose rules are written against you. Fix that before you post another reel.

Build the Foundation Once

I still post. I am documenting the Thai cannabis scene on Instagram because it is a good place to show the work. It is just not where the work lives. The shop owners thinking about this seriously talk it through inside Reefers Club, an invite only community of people in the Thai cannabis industry. And building the owned side for licensed shops, the website, the Google presence, the content, is the marketing and content work I do, with the Google side covered on Grow on Google.

Rent the stage. Own the building.

Written by someone who has watched great dispensaries lose their Instagram overnight and keep their customers anyway, because they had built the foundation first.
