Chiang Rai has 136 licensed cannabis dispensaries on the government register, the fourteenth highest count in Thailand.
Only 43 of them are in Chiang Rai city itself. Most are spread across the province's smaller towns, with clusters at Mae Sai on the Myanmar border and around Chiang Saen and the Golden Triangle.
Near the borders, one rule matters more than any other: cannabis cannot leave Thailand. Crossing into Myanmar or Laos with it, even a small amount you bought legally here, can mean serious criminal charges on the other side.
