How To Find a Good Dispensary in Bangkok (When Google Can't Help You)

Google "best dispensary in Bangkok" and count how many results are written by dispensaries ranking themselves number one.

I'll wait.

Every single "best of" list you'll find is either a dispensary's own blog (surprise - they ranked themselves first), a directory that charges shops for premium placement, or a travel blog that visited three places on a press trip and declared them the definitive answer. The entire first page of results for the most important cannabis search query in Bangkok is compromised.

I know this because I've been to over 650 dispensaries in this city. I'm a Level 7 Google Maps contributor - top 10% globally for dispensary reviews. And I don't own a dispensary. I don't take sponsorships from them. I'm not selling you on a single shop. I'm the person who walked into all of them so I could tell you which ones are worth walking into yourself.

Here's what 650 visits taught me about finding the good ones.

The Five Things That Actually Matter

After three years of opening doors, smelling jars, asking questions, and occasionally getting ripped off, the pattern is obvious. The difference between a good Bangkok dispensary and a tourist trap comes down to five things, and none of them are visible on Google.

1. The Jars

A real shop stores flower in sealed glass, away from direct light, at controlled humidity. The trichomes - those tiny crystal structures that contain most of the cannabinoids and terpenes - degrade when exposed to light, air, and heat. A dispensary that respects flower stores it properly. A trap keeps everything in plastic baggies under fluorescent lights, slowly cooking it into what I've been calling lawn clippings since dispensary number three.

If they won't let you smell the flower before you buy, leave. Any shop that hides the product behind sealed packaging and a "trust me" is hiding something other than quality.

2. The Budtender's Response

Ask a simple question and watch the budtender's face. "What's your favorite strain on the menu right now?" or "What would you recommend for someone who wants to relax but not fall asleep?"

The good ones light up. They have opinions. They pull out a jar and walk you through it. The bad ones glance at the back room or default to the most expensive item on the shelf. That glance is the single most reliable quality indicator I've found across 650 visits. More reliable than the Google rating, the decor, or the size of the LED leaf in the window.

3. The Honesty About Thai-Grown

Here's a secret the tourist traps don't want you to know: some of the best flower in Bangkok is now Thai-grown. The quality ceiling on Thai genetics has risen dramatically. But tourist psychology still assumes "imported" means "better," and the traps exploit this. They slap an American flag on a jar of mid and triple the price.

A dispensary that talks honestly about Thai-grown flower - that takes pride in what Thai growers are producing instead of hiding behind imported branding - is a dispensary that respects you enough to tell the truth.

4. The Medical Setup

Since the 2025 regulatory shift, dispensaries are required to have a licensed medical practitioner available. The good shops have embraced this - they offer proper PT33 consultations with practitioners who ask real questions and provide real guidance. The mediocre shops treat the medical requirement as a checkbox.

The quality of the PT33 experience tells you everything about how seriously a shop takes its responsibility to the people walking through the door.

5. The Location Tax

Geography is destiny in Bangkok cannabis. The closer you are to Khao San Road, Nana, or any heavy tourist corridor, the higher the prices and the lower the average quality. I've documented this extensively: shops ten minutes from the tourist highway can charge 200-400 baht for flower that costs 700-900 in the trap zone.

This doesn't mean every tourist-area shop is bad. It means location should make you more skeptical, not less.

Why the Rating Is Lying to You

You'll see a shop with 4.9 stars and 2,000 reviews and assume it's the promised land. Sometimes it is. Often it's a shop that figured out the review game.

Discount for a 5-star review. A free joint for a Google mention. "Tell your friends" incentive programs that turn Google into a billboard instead of a verdict. I'm a Maps contributor. I know exactly how this sausage gets made.

The 4.2-star shop with 200 reviews might be serving the same quality - or better - than the 4.9-star shop with 2,000. The difference isn't the flower. It's the marketing budget. I wrote a whole post on how ratings mislead if you want the deep dive.

What Google Can't Index

Here's the fundamental problem with searching for dispensaries online: the things that make a shop great are invisible to algorithms.

Google can index a rating. It can index a review. It can tell you opening hours and location. What it can't tell you:

Does the flower smell alive or like hay? Does the budtender know their strains or are they winging it? Is the "imported Gelato" actually Gelato? Are the prices fair for the quality, or are you paying a location tax? Is the PT33 consultation a real medical conversation or a rubber stamp? Is the shop actually licensed and compliant, or just operating until someone notices?

These are the questions that matter. And they can only be answered by someone who walked in.

One thing Google absolutely can tell you - if you know what to look for - is whether a shop is currently licensed. Every Bangkok dispensary is now required to display an 8-digit PIN code sign showing their license expiry year, color-coded:

Red sign: License expires 2026. This shop is in the first renewal wave. Of the 8,636 licenses expiring in 2025-2026, only 17% have renewed under the new stricter requirements. A red sign is not automatically a reason to leave, but it is a reason to ask: has this shop already renewed, or are they operating on borrowed time?

Yellow sign: Expires 2027. More comfortable runway.

Green sign: Expires 2028 or later. The shop has either recently renewed under the new medical framework or secured a longer license term.

Check the sign before you buy. It is one of the few pieces of compliance information that is literally posted on the wall.

That's Why the Maps Exist

I didn't visit 650 dispensaries to write a blog. I did it because I couldn't stop. But somewhere around dispensary 200, I realized the maps in my head were worth more than the weed in my drawer. Friends visiting Bangkok would text me: "where do I actually go?" And I had answers - real ones - because I'd been there, smelled the jars, and watched the budtender's eyes.

So I made them real. Everything I know - the BTS-adjacent gems, the late-night spots that don't sell you garbage at 2am, the wellness-focused shops with real medical consultations, the handful of places that treat Thai genetics with the respect they deserve - organized into curated lists you can load straight into your Google Maps.

That's the cheat code. The one I wish I'd had at dispensary number three, standing in a neon trap, holding eight grams of lawn clippings and a grudge.

I've been documenting this whole journey - every visit, every scam, every hidden gem - on Instagram. The real conversations about what makes a dispensary worth your time happen inside Reefers Club, an invite-only community that takes this plant seriously. And the shops doing it right are the ones working with GoodiesFM to build brands based on quality instead of Google gaming.

You can keep rolling the dice. Or you can walk into the ones that already passed the test.
