Khao San and Chinatown: The Old Town Dispensary Guide

Here is the first thing every guide to Khao San Road weed should tell you, and most do not: there is no train station on Khao San Road. Not a BTS, not an MRT, nothing within an easy stroll. If a shop's listing says it is "steps from the BTS", it is not on Khao San.

That matters, because the old town is where a lot of travellers make their very first cannabis purchase in Thailand, often on their first night, often jetlagged, often a few beers in. The good news is that a handful of genuinely good licensed shops sit right around Khao San. Chinatown, two kilometres southeast, has its own and, unlike Khao San, it does have an MRT station.

This guide covers both, with distances measured from verified coordinates rather than guessed from a map pin. It comes from 900+ dispensary visits, 900+ of them in Bangkok.

Getting There Without a BTS

To Khao San Road. Khao San is a short street, about 400m long, in the Banglamphu area of Phra Nakhon. Your two rail and river options:

Sam Yot MRT (Blue Line). The nearest train station. From the eastern end of Khao San Road it is about 1.3km, or around 16 minutes on foot. Walkable on a cool evening, a lot less fun at 2pm in April. Many people take a short taxi or tuk tuk for the last stretch.

Phra Arthit pier (N13). The Chao Phraya Express Boat stops here, and it is the most pleasant way in. The pier is about 450m from the western end of Khao San, roughly 6 minutes' walk through the Phra Athit Road cafes.

To Chinatown. Wat Mangkon MRT on the Blue Line sits on Charoen Krung Road, about a 2 to 3 minute walk from Yaowarat Road, Chinatown's main street. This is the easy one.

My BTS dispensary rule says the best shop is the one you can actually reach. In the old town that means measuring from the street you are staying on, not from a station, so for Khao San I measured every shop from Khao San Road itself.

Khao San: The Best Licensed Dispensaries

Every shop below matched an entry on the official licence register when I compiled this. Hours and licences change, so confirm before you go, and check the licence sticker at the door or look the shop up on the ThaiCannaMapped Dispensary Register.

Khaosan Kush Club

Best for: a calm, friendly first visit right on the strip.

On Khao San Road itself. In a street packed with dispensaries, this is the one that earned its reviews: over 1,000 on Google at a 5.0 average, with staff named Yawai, Nyi, Jazz and Kent praised again and again for going beyond the sale. Customers describe it as a break from the chaos rather than part of it. Some say the team looked after them for their whole Thailand trip. It runs late, closing only for a few hours in the morning, so check the current hours on the door.

Green Diamond

Best for: home grown flower, any time of night.

About 3 minutes' walk from Khao San Road (roughly 250m), on Chakrabongse Road. Open 24/7. Green Diamond grows its own cannabis and stocks it in its own shop, so the staff can tell you where each strain came from because they grew it. That kind of transparency is rare in a backpacker zone. For anyone who cares about provenance as much as price, this is the most authentic option around Khao San.

Stoner Neighborhood

Best for: a genuine community shop near the river.

About 4 minutes' walk from Khao San Road (roughly 350m), on Phra Athit Road, and about 3 minutes from Phra Arthit pier (roughly 200m). If you arrive by boat, this is the first good shop you reach. The name is honest: it feels like a neighbourhood place rather than a tourist stop, with a 5.0 average across 700+ Google reviews and a strong Instagram community. Open from late morning until after midnight.

California's Finest, Khaosan

Best for: a recognisable name for a nervous first timer, 24/7.

About 6 minutes' walk from Khao San Road (roughly 500m), on Phra Sumen Road, north of the main strip. Open 24/7. Part of a Bangkok chain with a curated range, it is the first stop for a lot of travellers who arrive knowing nothing about Thai cannabis, and it handles that well. If someone in your group wants the reassurance of a brand they have heard of, this is the one. It is not near any BTS or train station, whatever you may read elsewhere.

Chinatown: The Best Licensed Dispensary

Greenhead, Chinatown

Best for: a clinic chain's standards on Yaowarat's busiest stretch.

On Yaowarat Road, about 3 minutes' walk from Wat Mangkon MRT (roughly 200m). Greenhead is a medical cannabis chain with branches across Thailand, and this one sits right among the gold shops and street food. Staff are known for pulling you into proper conversations about strains, and the range goes beyond flower into CBD oils and skincare. It opens mid afternoon, perfect timing for a walk through Yaowarat as the food stalls set up.

Chinatown is thinner on licensed dispensaries than you might expect. Several shops in the area did not pass my licence check, so I have left them out. Stick with the shop above, or check the Register before you walk into anything else.

What the Old Town Is Like After Dark

Khao San Road at night is loud, crowded, cheap and fun, and it is also where the worst cannabis decisions in Bangkok get made. Buckets, balloons and street vendors all compete for your attention. Some vendors will offer you something to smoke. That is outside the legal system entirely, and it is the easiest way to get both a bad product and a bad night.

Chinatown at night is a food crawl first. Yaowarat fills with stalls from early evening, the crowds are thick, and the area is generally safe. It is a great place to eat before or after a dispensary visit. It is not a place to consume, prescription or not.

Keep your judgement. If you have been drinking on Khao San, buy tomorrow. The first time buyer's guide explains why, and why starting low matters.

The Legal Path, Briefly

Legal flower in Thailand means a licensed shop and a PT33 prescription from a Thai licensed practitioner. Tourists qualify with a passport; a prescription from home does not count. Go in person rather than through a chat app. The steps are in my PT33 prescription guide.

Then consume in private. The old town is full of guesthouses with thin walls and shared balconies, so ask your host before you book. Public smoking is a nuisance offence, and smoking inside a dispensary can cost the shop its licence. The practical answer is in where you can actually smoke in Bangkok.

Nearby Alternatives

Between the two. Siam Green Cannabis Co has a licensed Chinatown branch on Maha Chai Road, about 8 minutes' walk from Sam Yot MRT (roughly 650m). It sits between the two areas rather than on Yaowarat itself, with the polished standards the Siam Green brand is known for, including a Thai traditional medicine practitioner on site.

By MRT. The Blue Line runs from Sam Yot and Wat Mangkon straight to Si Lom, so Silom's shops are a short ride away. See weed in Silom.

After midnight. My 24 hour dispensary picks include the shops that stay good at 2am.

The bigger picture. The best weed shops in Bangkok is the city wide shortlist, and weed in Bangkok covers buying, costs and the law.

Quick Answers

Is there a BTS or MRT station on Khao San Road? No. The nearest is Sam Yot MRT, about 1.3km from the eastern end. Phra Arthit pier (N13) is closer, about 450m from the western end.

Which MRT station is closest to Chinatown? Wat Mangkon, on the Blue Line, a couple of minutes from Yaowarat Road.

Are there 24 hour dispensaries near Khao San? Yes. Green Diamond and California's Finest were both open 24/7 when I compiled this. Confirm before you go.

Get the Exit, Elevate List

The old town is the exception to my station rule. For everywhere else, my Exit, Elevate list covers 60+ Bangkok dispensaries under 600m from a BTS or MRT stop, and The Night Shift lists 20+ that stay open all night. Both are free on the curated list page.

I post old town finds on Instagram, including the Khao San shops that looked great at 11pm and did not hold up in daylight. Some of the most experienced operators in the old town are part of Reefers Club, an invite only community of people in the Thai cannabis industry. And for the good shops here trying to be found by travellers before the touts find them, my marketing and content work is about exactly that.

Take the boat. Walk the last bit. Buy sober.

Written by someone who has walked from Sam Yot to Khao San in the midday heat and now takes the boat.
